Visualizing the Body: Medical Illustration as Art and Education
What is this?
This exhibit explores the development of Western medical illustration from the sixteenth century through the present. From the recorded teachings of Galen to modern medical textbooks, we track the use of medical illustration as an educational tool as well as a means of artistic expression. Rochester’s connection to the lineage of twentieth-century century American medical illustration is highlighted through the work of artists such as Natt C. Jacobs and Robert Wabnitz. The items on display in this exhibit come from the collections of the History of Medicine Section at Edward G. Miner Library as well as the RIT Archives. They are complemented by a library atrium display of work from graduating undergraduate students and MFA candidates studying medical illustration at RIT.
