What is this?

What role can art and storytelling play in understanding health — and in healing? Explore comics, graphic novels and memoirs from UC San Diego Library's Graphic Medicine Collection: vividly drawn, personal stories about the experience of facing illness and finding care. In these pages, a single drawing can capture what's hard to put into words, sharing insights we can see and feel. We can learn from those who've faced health challenges and witness how they found their way through. Comics of Care is presented in connection with The Science of Story, a signature celebration of storytelling across UC San Diego. Returning for a third year during Comic-Con week, this series explores the art, craft and cultural power of narrative. In joining that conversation, this book exhibit shows how art and stories can help us heal — by letting us into another person's experience of illness and recovery. We hope these works deepen empathy for health struggles and spark discussion among patients, caregivers and clinicians who want to improve care. This collection was curated by UC San Diego librarians Jeffery Loo, Karen Heskett and Zemirah Ngow. Comics of Care is on view in the Sally T. WongAvery Library breezeway from June 29 to September 13, during the building's open hours.
